The Boeing C-40 Clipper is a military version of the Next Generation Boeing 737 used to transport cargo and passengers. It is used by the United States Navy, Air Force and Marine Corps.

The C-40 combines the fuselage of the Boeing 737-700 with reinforced wings and the larger and heavier landing gear of the 737-800. It also has additional fuel tanks that allow a refueling range of up to 5,000 nmi (9,300 km) compared to 3,010 nmi (5,570 km) for the standard 737-700.

The first flight took place in April 2000 and the first flight of the C-40A aircraft in April 2001.

The US Navy Reserve is the first customer for a "combi" aircraft based on the Next Generation 737 (capable of carrying both cargo and passengers).

Clipper was ordered by the US Navy to replace the aging C-9B Skytrain II fleet. The C-40A is the first new logistics support aircraft in 17 years to join the US Navy Reserve. The Naval Reserve provides all of the Navy's medium and heavy airlift capabilities.

The Clipper meets or exceeds international noise and virus requirements, which the Naval Reserve C-9 fleet does not. It is also more fuel efficient and offers greater range and payload capacity. Clipper is certified to operate in all-passenger (121-passenger), all-cargo or combined ("combi") configurations that can accommodate up to three cargo pallets and 70 passengers on the main deck.

The first two of four aircraft were delivered on 21 April 2001 to Fleet Logistics Support Squadron Five Nine (VR-59) at Naval Air Station/Joint Reserve Base Fort Worth, Texas, with two more aircraft to follow before the anniversary. The fifth and sixth aircraft were delivered in August 2002 to VR-58 at Naval Air Station Jacksonville, Florida. Other aircraft were sent to VR-57 at Naval Air Station North Island, California. The C-40A provides superior fuel efficiency, range and payload over the C-9B aircraft it replaces.

In the 2018 Marine Aviation Plan, the US Marine Corps stated that it intends to acquire two C-40A aircraft for airlift missions, replacing the Skytrain fleet.

On December 4, 2018, an online notice was published by the Marines seeking C-40 suppliers for delivery in 2020.

The USMC Skytrains were retired in 2017, and to prepare for the transition to the new aircraft, Marine Transport Squadron One personnel were assigned to operate the Navy Clippers until their own aircraft arrived.

The United States Air Force has selected the C-40B, a military version of the Boeing 737-700 Business Jet, to replace its aging fleet of C-137 aircraft used to transport US combatant commanders. The Air Force awarded the medium lift contract in August 2000. The 89th Airlift Wing acquired its first C-40B aircraft in December 2002. Both units are based at Andrews Air Force Base, Maryland. The 15th Air Wing, Hickam AFB, Hawaii, acquired the C-40B for US Pacific Command in February 2003. The 86th Air Wing, Ramstein AB, Germany, acquired the C-40B for US Air Forces Europe in December 2004.

The cabin area is equipped with a crew rest area, a well-known guest room with beds, two galleys and business class seats with work desks.

The C-40B is designed to be an "office in the sky" for military and government leaders. The aircraft has two-way broadband data communications, including secure voice and data communications. Items include Internet and network access, telephone, satellite, fax and photocopier. The C-40B also has a computer-based passenger data system.

The C-40C is a VIP transport aircraft often used to transport members of the Cabinet and Congress. The aircraft is equipped similarly to the C-40B, but without advanced communications capabilities. Unique to the C-40C is the ability to change its configuration to accommodate from 42 to 111 passengers.

C 40a Clipper

The C-40C replaces three C-22s (a military Boeing 727) operated by the Air National Guard and National Guard Bureau for personnel airlift. The C-40C was the first military aircraft acquired in it as an external aircraft for the Department of Defense. The 201st Airlift Squadron, District of Columbia Air National Guard acquired two C-40C aircraft in October 2002. The Air Force Reserve 932d Airlift Wing, Scott AFB, Illinois acquired three C-40C aircraft in 2007.
