Glock, 43 Striker Fired, Sub Compact, 9mm, 3.41" Barrel, Polymer Frame, Matte Finish, Fixed Sights, 6Rd, 2 Mags. I will preface this Glock 26 review before the 5th generation begins. For many in the year, Model 26, Glock , the smallest double-stack 9mm, was my favorite Glock.
When I first started working in gun shops, the most compact Glock 9mm was the 19, but gun lore and gun magazine ad copy led me to think that the relatively new .40 S&W caliber was next. Thor's hammer is the best, so I carried the .40 caliber twin in 19, the Glock 23.
In the late 90s, I took a couple of years off selling handguns, and that time coincided with the Shall-Issue concealed carry movement taking off across the country. When I got back to working with pistols through the glass in '98, I saw that Glock had expanded their line to take advantage of the boom in concealed carry by introducing the small, subcompact Glock 26 9mm.
Well, I still didn't have faith in the 9mm, so I bought the Glock 26's cousin in .357 SIG, the Glock 33, and never warmed to it.

See, the subcompact Glock 26 and 27 were the first Glock pistols to feature finger slots molded into the front grip strap and "thumb rests" incorporated into the frames. This was done in order to score enough "points" under an obscure rule established by the Gun Control Act of 1968. The ins and outs of the point system can be found here on the NRA-ILA website, but basically because he lost points. size and weight, the subcompact Glock 26 had to be recovered in a different way, and "target grips" were worth five points.
For me, as well as others, those finger grooves were in the wrong place. On older Glock models, it wasn't that big; a utility size car will allow for quite a bit of "slop" in the grip and still perform well. But a small gun? He will punish a bad catch.
I avoided small Glocks until the Glock 43 debuted and bought one of them. It was produced domestically and therefore did not have to meet import points, so there was no finger-crossing. Wow! But the paddle-thin shape of the single-stack gun punished a bad grip mercilessly.
When I was asked to review the Glock 26 Gen 5, my response was lukewarm at best. As I said, the 26 was my least favorite Glock, although I have come to see the 9mm as a defensive cartridge.

When I got my hands on the review sample, I was immediately struck by a couple of things.
First, AmeriGlo's Gen 5 optional factory "Bold" sights are way ahead of the curve on a factory gun that isn't currently high-end semi-custom, at least for carry-type sights. I've been ditching the factory sights for a decade now and dropping into a set of Trijicon HD or AmeriGlo Pros with their previous chunky dots and color contrasts. Now this is how I can get it out of the box. Good job, Glock!
Second, the trigger on this Glock 26 test sample is the best factory Glock trigger I've ever heard. I know Glock has described their factory triggers as "5.5lbs" forever, but in reality they've always been more like 6 or 6.5lbs and thus support a thriving aftermarket for trigger modifications.
Thanks to the new Gen 5 architecture, the trigger on this Glock 26 is an honest ~5.25 pounds on my RCBS trigger gauge. Also, the weight is fairly consistent throughout the trigger pull, unlike the previous Glock trigger, which had little drag on the initial pull before hitting a prominent wall. It's similar to my modified Glock triggers, they use the Glock's green plastic "NY1" trigger return spring and 3.5lb "minus" connector to achieve the same feel.

The proof is in the shooting, though, and two small adjustments to the Glock 26 Gen 5 grip compared to my longtime Glock 33 make a world of difference. First, it has a thicker grip texture, which is a big improvement over the 3rd generation. Second, that annoying ridge between the finger grooves is gone.
Instead of the constant wedge trying to separate the fingers, I can now smooth the ring finger and ring finger higher on the grip, which improves control. Also, the standard diameter grip makes it easier for me to shoot faster and more accurately than my Glock 43. At 22 ounces empty, it weighs three and a half ounces more than the single-stack micro-Glock, though it's half as good. while ammo capacity, that difference will increase by an ounce or more when loaded, depending on what you feed it.
As far as shooting power and increased capacity, I think this will be the first Glock 26 I buy. I'll see if it can replace my Glock 43 as a "J-frame for the new millennium".
